Today I spent a good amount of time sitting outside reading the London Review of Books, and there was an excellent review of Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of War and Peace. For the first time, I understood Andre -- he'd seemed like such a prig before. I bought the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation for the Kindle because my ancient Penguin copy has a small font that's tiring on the eyes. Vintage Classic, New York, 2008. Translated from the Russian by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. They did a great job with Anna Karenina, and Penguin did a great job packaging it. I'd remembered reading an article in The New Yorker on Constance Garnett and “Translation Wars.” I remember that the article led me to purchase the Rosemary Edmonds' translation of War and Peace. The War and Peace Reading Support Group begins on Monday, but we will start reading the Tolstoy this weekend. Tolstoy wrote French for some of the passages for War and Peace. I was all set to write about how excited I am at the new Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. Pevear/Volokhonsky's War and Peace transformed the book, which I had read several times before in the Maude translation. I'm curious as to why the other bloggers you follow(ed) weren't pleased with the translation. We're using the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, but feel free to take up any of the available translations. When Pevear and Volokhonsky translated it, they kept the French with the English translation as a footnote.
